Writer's Statement

We had this idea on the backburner for years. After graduating college, I realized I was in the same place in life that Mars is in, and also felt the urge to embark on something reflective and confrontational. This series is a tribute to anyone who finds themselves looking backwards because it’s too daunting to face forward. It’s a period in life that can be sad, but it can also be really funny, and I aimed to highlight the humor of this quandary through the talk show. This is my first time writing anything serial, and the first time anything I’ve written got produced beyond a 2 man crew. So, I’m extremely grateful for everyone who has helped us so far, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.

Director's Statement

Adulthood for a lot of Gen Z is frightening. A growing climate crisis, fractured political system, and looming economic crisis have all taken place over the course of our lives leaving us with a critical question; what’s the point in fighting? It’s easier to laugh and delude ourselves. I think The Past, Tonight with Mars Apollo captures this sentiment perfectly, and it’s part of why I want to tell this story. We don’t have the courage to believe that we can succeed. We don’t have hope in a future. And so, Mars Apollo becomes a story of past, present, and future and how we, with all of our histories, grapple with the tension between all three. I hope it makes you feel something.
